L'ART
DE S'ENVOLER
a
flyer for flight is a daily drawing excercise, with instruction pamphlets, and a work-out video. The interactive installation includes a trampoline, where the viewer is invited to
jump and experience the effects of gravity. Channeling animism and martial arts, my excercise routines observe
animals that inspire correct flying poses (ex: crane, otter, surfer).
Investigating the power of mind over matter and creative visualisation, I am thinking of new age novels I read as a teenager such as Journey to Ixland (Carlos Castenada), The Zen of Seeing (Frederick Frank) and Johnathan Livington Seagull (Richard Bach). Hoping
to push the limits of perception and question human potential, I open myself to new dimensions of
reality. I meditated on positioning my body weight correctly, to help a
gracefull landing, or to keep myself from flying away. Another phase of my project is asking people to describe ''how it
feels to fly''. I guide the participants to remember their experience in dreams,
on swings, when swimming or snow boarding...
ARTIST STATEMENT
Questioning the role of rituals in society,
my work investigates the practical,
spiritual, and esthetic nature of art. Through archival process (print-making,
scanning, audio recording, video, interviews), I focus on developing opportunities
for significant dialogue. Be it critical thinking or healing conversations, these
events of sharing, transformation and communication are primordial to my
practice. I am especially interested in the notions of care and anxiety as explored by Heidegger, who sees anxiety as a productive attribute, considering it brings us to care. My recent work suggests that death of the subject (identity, individualism) is necessary for human potential to unfold. Letting go is crutial.
